With a range of models available, each with its own unique features and capabilities, it can be challenging to decide which one is the best fit for you.

In this blog, GB Vehicle Leasing will explore the different Tesla models in detail, discussing their specifications, performance, and features, to help you make an informed decision when it comes to choosing your next electric vehicle. Whether you're looking for speed, range, or a combination of both, our comparison guide will provide you with all the information you need to find the Tesla model that best suits your needs. Let's dive in and explore the world of Tesla electric cars!

Tesla Model 3

Firstly, let’s take a look at the fantastic Tesla Model 3. The Model 3 was designed to be a more affordable and accessible electric car than other Tesla models. Tesla began taking pre-orders for the Model 3 in March 2016, and within just one week, the company received over 325,000 reservations. The first production Model 3 was completed in July 2017, and deliveries to customers began later that month. Overall, GB Vehicle Leasing feels that the Tesla Model 3 has played a considerable role in popularising electric cars and accelerating the transition towards sustainable transportation.

In terms of design, the Tesla Model 3 is sleek and modern, with a low, aerodynamic profile and clean lines. Its exterior also features a glass roof and a front trunk. The interior of the Model 3 is minimalist, with a large touchscreen display and few physical buttons or controls. We feel the interior of the Tesla Model 3 is spacious and inviting, comfortably accommodating five adults if needed. Notably, the quality of the interior is a big improvement compared to the older Tesla Model S. In addition, the Model 3 has a combined total of 425 litres of storage space when both the front and rear storage areas are considered. However, it falls slightly behind competitors such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, which both offer 480 litres of boot space.

As well, the Tesla Model 3 is considered to be a very safe car. In the Euro NCAP's tests, the Model 3 received a 5-star rating overall, with excellent ratings in each individual category such as its ability to protect adults, as well as its safety assistance features. The Model 3 has advanced safety features like lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition. Other key features with the Model 3 include Autopilot, a high-quality audio system, lumbar support and DAB Digital radio.

The Tesla Model 3 comes in several variations, each offering unique range and performance capabilities. The Standard Range option boasts a range of 305 miles (WLTP combined) and can accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds. On the other hand, the Long-Range option has the longest range capacity at 374 miles and can reach 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds. The Performance option has a range of 340 miles and can achieve the fastest 0-60mph time at just 3.1 seconds. All versions of the Tesla Model 3 feature electric motors for immediate torque and smooth acceleration, along with Tesla's regenerative braking system to conserve energy during braking.

Moreover, all versions of the Tesla Model 3 are equipped with Tesla's Supercharger network, allowing for speedy charging of the car's battery. With a Supercharger, the Model 3 can charge from 10% to 80% in roughly 35 minutes. Additionally, the Model 3 can be charged using a regular electrical outlet or Tesla's Wall Connector, which can be installed at home for faster charging.

Overall, the Tesla Model 3 is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for an electric vehicle with advanced technology and impressive performance for a reasonable price. With its multiple versions that offer different ranges and performance levels, the Model 3 provides a versatile and eco-friendly driving experience. So, with pricing starting from £42,990, could this be the ideal electric car for you?

Tesla Model S

Up next, let’s take a look at the Tesla Model S. This Tesla car was first introduced in 2012 and is the company's flagship vehicle. The development of the Model S began in 2008, although the first production models were not delivered to customers until June 2012. Over the years, the Model S has undergone several upgrades and updates, including changes to its battery capacity, range, and performance. In 2015, Tesla introduced the "Ludicrous" mode, which made this Tesla one of the quickest production cars available at that point. The Model S has also played a significant role in promoting electric vehicles as a viable alternative to conventional cars. As well it paved the way for Tesla's other electric vehicles, such as the Model X, Model 3, and Model Y.

The Tesla Model S is a full-size luxury electric car that features sleek and modern exterior design. Meanwhile, the focal point of the Model S's interior is its 17-inch touchscreen display, which controls nearly all of the car's functions. The touchscreen is highly responsive, similar to that of top-tier smartphones, and is considered one of the best in the industry. The Model S comes standard with an extensive list of features, including sat nav, a wireless phone charger, a panoramic glass roof, and a 360-degree camera. The Model S also offers more luggage space than its similarly sized alternatives, with a total of 793 litres of storage.

Like the Model 3, the Tesla Model S is recognised as a safe car. The Model S comes equipped with safety features like lane departure warning and a speed assistance system. Other features include the Model S’ adaptive suspension, Sentry Mode, comfortable seating throughout and useful storage compartments. In addition, the Tesla Model S is known for its impressive driving experience, thanks to its all-electric powertrain and advanced technology. The Model S offers instant acceleration due to its electric motors, which provide immediate torque to the wheels, making the car incredibly quick off the line. The Model S also has a low centre of gravity, which helps to improve handling and provide a more stable ride.

As for electric range, the Tesla Model S can reportedly achieve up to 405 miles of range on a charge. Opt for the Plaid model instead and its range is reduced to 396 miles. However, the Model S Plaid is capable of 0-60mph in just 1.99 seconds (with rollout subtracted) and has a top speed of 200mph, making it the quicker version. All versions of the Model S are equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that provides excellent traction and acceleration.

Charging the Tesla Model S is typically done using one of two methods: at home or at a public charging station. At home, the Model S can be charged using a standard electrical outlet, although this method is relatively slow. A more convenient option is to install a Tesla Wall Connector, which allows for faster charging times. The Wall Connector can fully recharge the Model S in about 8-10 hours, depending on the battery size. When on the road, Tesla Model S owners can access Tesla's extensive Supercharger network. Superchargers are high-speed charging stations that can provide up to 200 miles of range in as little as 15 minutes of charging.

Overall, the Tesla Model S is a premium electric car that offers exceptional range, performance, and technology features. Its luxurious and modern design, combined with its advanced features, make it a top choice for those who want a high-performance electric car without compromising on luxury or style.

Tesla Model X

Another Tesla model worth mentioning is the Tesla Model X. The development of this luxury electric SUV began in 2012 and official production started in 2015. The Model X was designed to be an all-electric SUV that combines performance, luxury, and advanced technology. It shares many components with the Tesla Model S, including its all-electric powertrain and 17-inch touchscreen display. Since its launch, the Model X has undergone several updates and improvements, including the addition of new variants. While this Tesla model may not be as desirable as others, there remain a strong market for an electric car of its kind.

In terms of design, the car's exterior is characterised by its aerodynamic lines, with a sleek and sporty silhouette that sets it apart from other SUVs on the market. One of the most distinctive design features of the Tesla Model X is its Falcon Wing doors. These doors are hinged at the roof and open upwards, providing easier access to the second and third-row seats. The doors also feature sensors that detect obstacles and adjust their opening angle to avoid hitting them. Inside, the Tesla Model X has a minimalist, yet luxurious design that focuses on functionality. Like the Model S, the car's dashboard is dominated by a large, 17-inch touchscreen display.

Size wise, the Tesla Model X is slightly bigger than the Model Y and has seating for up to seven people (depending on spec configuration). In terms of luggage space, there's up to 2,180 litres depending on the seating configuration in place, plus there’s a 187-litre 'frunk' for front storage. In addition, the Tesla Model X has a max. trailer towing limit of 2,300kg (braked), although this drops significantly if you opt for the 22” wheels. However, it is worth noting that towing a large trailer or caravan may drastically affect the range.

As for electric range, the Tesla Model X offers up to 348 miles of range on a single charge. Opt for the Plaid model instead and its range drops slightly to 333 miles. However, the Tesla Model X Plaid is capable of 0-60mph in just 2.5 seconds (with rollout subtracted) and has a top speed of 163mph thanks to its tri motor powertrain. The Model X's electric powertrain delivers instant torque, providing rapid acceleration from a standstill. This gives the Model X a quick and responsive feel that is exhilarating and fun to drive. The Tesla Model X also features regenerative braking, which captures energy during deceleration and stores it back in the battery. This not only helps to extend the vehicle's range but also provides a smooth and controlled ride.

In conclusion, GB Vehicle Leasing think the Tesla Model X is an exceptional electric SUV that offers luxury, performance, and plenty of advanced technology. While the Model X isn’t the cheapest Tesla model, it offers unparalleled features, making it a top choice for drivers looking for a cutting-edge electric vehicle.

Tesla Model Y

Last but certainly not least, let’s take a look at the incredible Tesla Model Y which was first announced in March 2019. First deliveries in the UK for this Tesla car only began in February 2022, however orders could be placed before this. The development of the Model Y began in 2013, shortly after the launch of the Model S. Tesla founder, Elon Musk, announced in 2015 that the company was planning to produce a SUV based on the Model 3 platform, which would be called the Model Y. Musk suggested that the Model Y would be easier to manufacture than the Model X SUV and would be more affordable. The Tesla Model Y shares many components with the Model 3, including the electric powertrain and battery pack. However, the vehicle can seat up to seven passengers with its optional third-row seating configuration.

The Tesla Model Y has an opulent design and features dual motor AWD. It uses the same architecture as the Model 3, however it also benefits from a slightly raised ground clearance and higher driving position. Meanwhile, the interior is spacious, with plenty of legroom and headroom, and it has a large panoramic glass roof that provides ample natural light. Also, Tesla's advanced driver-assistance system, Autopilot, is standard on the Tesla Model Y. It includes features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The Model Y's infotainment system features a large 15-inch touchscreen display that controls everything from music and climate control to vehicle settings. In addition, it has an enormous storage capacity of over 2,100 litres. In five seat form, the boot space is a whopping 854 litres which is much bigger than key rival – the Volkswagen ID.4.

The Model Y is available in three versions – the Model Y Long Range, Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Performance. It’s claimed the Tesla Model Y Long Range can achieve up to 331 miles (WLTP). This figure is very impressive, although it doesn’t quite match the maximum 348-mile range of a Tesla Model X. Alternatively, for the ultimate performance, the Model Y Performance is the preferred option. It has a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds (with rollout subtracted) and a top speed of 150mph. As the entry-level spec, the RWD version has a max. electric range of 283 miles (19” wheels) and a top speed of 135mph. Like other Tesla models, there are various ways to charge the Tesla Model Y. In particular, Tesla Superchargers can recharge the Model Y's battery up to 150 miles in as little as 15 minutes.

As for driving experience, the Tesla Model Y is both exciting and practical. Its electric powertrain and advanced technology provide a smooth and responsive ride, while its spacious interior and convenient features make it a practical choice for families and commuters alike. Plus, the Model Y's advanced safety features, strong body structure, and high safety ratings from multiple safety organisations make it a safe car for drivers and passengers. With a starting price from £44,990, we feel the Tesla Model Y offers excellent range, storage capacity and design, all for a reasonable price.
